cq ww ssb contest

I thought I`d give my new contest call an airing over the weekend. I pondered whether I really needed another callsign, after all GM4UBJ is my hard won callsign and its what everyone expects to hear when I call cq. A while back whilst operating QRP power (5 watts or less) with my restricted aerials in my small garden I became fed up calling stations and being unable to get across the letter U, I used the phonetic Uniform, United, Uruguay, University, Unbelievable ! only to get the reply "is it Oscar"! . I then applied for the short contest callsign GM4M and was duly awarded the call by return of email, not that it did me much good over the weekend, with only 118 calls in my log the conditions where dire. The higher bands all closed by about 20:00 utc and the low bands were empty as conditions were so bad, however as usual it has occasional moments like working 3 Moroccan stations on 80 and 40, or catching Senegal(6W1RY) on 2 bands. Only 1 Canadian (VY2ZM with his super station) and no US stations were worked(or heard). With the sunspot numbers on the decline and the solar flux now in the mid 70s it looks like some more low band improvements need to be made. The shorter callsign helps but to be competitive I need a bigger mast, bigger aerials and a bigger garden..oh yes better stick to using CW as well , what's this microphone thing ?.
